Open Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition, and look for the AI Assistant channel. Google added it to GA4's default channel group on May 13, 2026, for visits whose referrer matches a known assistant such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude. It misses visits with no referrer, and clicks from Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, which count as Organic Search.
This guide is for store owners and marketers who want a straight number for AI traffic and an honest view of what that number leaves out. Facts are linked to Google's, OpenAI's and Shopify's own documentation, read on October 25, 2026. Anything marked “our analysis” is ours.
Does GA4 track AI traffic automatically?
Yes, since May 13, 2026. Google's release note that day, titled “New AI Assistant traffic measurement,” says Google Analytics “now provides a dedicated way to measure and analyze traffic originating from popular AI assistants.”
The mechanism is simple. When a visit's referrer matches Google's list of AI assistants, GA4 sets the medium to ai-assistant and the campaign to (ai-assistant), and the session falls into the new AI Assistant channel. Google's channel definitions page gives “ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot, or Grok” as examples. The release note names ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude. Google has not published the full list.
A second change followed on June 11, 2026: a Source group dimension that merges the different spellings of big platforms into one value. Google says it includes built-in groups for newer sources such as ChatGPT and Perplexity, and that it fills in historical data too.
Our analysis: if your ChatGPT visits sat under Referral until mid-May and under AI Assistant afterwards, that is the new rule moving them, not a jump in traffic. Compare like with like before you report growth.
Where do you find AI traffic in GA4?
In the standard Traffic acquisition report. Five steps:
- Open Reports > Acquisition > Traffic acquisition. The default dimension is Session primary channel group. Look for the row labeled AI Assistant.
- Add a secondary dimension of Session source to see which assistant sent each visit, such as chatgpt.com or gemini.google.com.
- Check the money columns. Key events and Total revenue show whether AI visitors buy, not just whether they arrive.
- Switch the dimension to Landing page with a filter on the AI Assistant channel. This shows which pages assistants link to. For stores it is often a product page or a buying guide, not the home page.
- Save the view as an exploration with the same dimensions, so it is there next month.
ChatGPT also tags its own links. OpenAI's publishers and developers FAQ says ChatGPT “automatically includes the UTM parameter utm_source=chatgpt.com in referral URLs.” So even when the referrer is lost, the source can still say chatgpt.com. That is why it is worth checking Session source, not only the channel row.
What does the AI Assistant channel miss?
More than its name suggests. The channel can only see visits that announce where they came from, and only from assistants on Google's list.
| What happened | Where it shows up | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A shopper clicks a link in ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude and the referrer comes through | AI Assistant channel | The referrer matches Google's list. |
| A shopper clicks a ChatGPT link but the referrer is stripped | Not documented. Check Session source for chatgpt.com | The utm_source tag survives even when the referrer does not. |
| A shopper copies a product link from a chat, or opens it from an app that sends no referrer | Direct | There is nothing to say where the visit came from. |
| A shopper clicks through from Google's AI Overviews or AI Mode | Organic Search | Google's definitions page says the AI Assistant channel excludes them. |
| An assistant Google doesn't recognize | Referral | Its referrer is not on the list. |
| A visitor declines analytics cookies | Not recorded, or only modeled | Your consent setup decides what GA4 may collect. |
| An agent completes the purchase inside its own checkout | Possibly nowhere in GA4 | The shopper may never load your site. The order still reaches your store. |
The last row matters most for stores, and it is growing. Shopify's Agentic Storefronts let shoppers on Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta surfaces such as Muse buy in a Shopify-powered checkout without leaving the agent, where direct checkout is switched on. Browser agents such as Meta's Muse can also visit like an anonymous first-time shopper, as we described in our Muse analysis. Neither looks like AI traffic in GA4.
Should you still build a custom channel group?
Yes, if you want either of two things the default channel can't give you: AI traffic from before May 2026, or assistants Google doesn't recognize. Google's custom channel groups help page says custom groups “can be applied to your reports retroactively,” which the default channel is not documented to do.
- Go to Admin > Data display > Channel groups and click Create new channel group. This copies the default group. You need Editor access or above.
- Add a channel called, for example, “AI assistants (custom).” Set the condition to Source, matches regex, and use a pattern such as
.*(chatgpt\.com|openai\.com|perplexity|claude\.ai|gemini\.google|copilot\.microsoft|deepseek|grok\.com).* - Move it near the top of the list, above Organic Search and Referral. Google says traffic is counted in “the first channel whose definition it matches.”
- Save the group, then pick it as the primary dimension in Traffic acquisition to compare months before and after May 13.
- Review the pattern each quarter. New assistants appear and old domains change. Check which sources are showing up under Referral and add any that belong.
Standard GA4 properties allow two custom channel groups, and GA4 360 properties allow five, each with up to 50 channels. If you already use both slots, edit one of them rather than replacing it.
How do you see traffic from Google's AI Mode and AI Overviews?
Not in GA4 on its own. Clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted as Organic Search, with no separate label. Expect fewer of those clicks over time, for reasons we cover in what Google's and Reddit's earnings mean for stores. Google offers two other places to look.
- Search Console's Generative AI performance report. It shows how often links to your site appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country, device and date. It reports impressions, not clicks. Google says that as of August 31, 2026 it has been rolled out to all websites. If you don't see it, your site may not have enough impressions yet.
- Merchant Center's AI performance insights. Under Analytics > Products > AI performance, Merchant Center shows your share of voice in conversational shopping queries in AI Mode and AI Overviews, compared with competitors you choose. It covers English-language queries in Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand and the United States, and organic results only.
Our analysis: for a store, the Merchant Center view is the more useful one. It is about products and competitors, which is closer to the question that matters: when a shopper asks Google's AI for something you sell, are you on the shortlist?
How do you count AI orders that GA4 never sees?
From the order side, not the visit side. Four sources fill most of the gap.
- Your store platform. Shopify's help center says orders from AI channels appear in the admin “with channel or referrer attribution.” Report them by sales channel next to your GA4 numbers.
- A post-purchase survey. Add “an AI assistant, such as ChatGPT” to your “How did you hear about us?” question. It catches the shopper who researched in a chat and came back days later by typing your URL.
- The Direct trend. Our analysis: unexplained growth in Direct sessions landing on deep product pages, rather than the home page, often points to links copied out of chats. It is a signal to investigate, not a number to report.
- Share of recommendation. Traffic only counts the shoppers who clicked. Asking a fixed set of shopping questions in each agent every month, and recording whether you are recommended, measures the shoppers who saw you and the ones who didn't. That is the method behind our Agent Index and the Track part of our services.
None of this matters if agents can't read your product pages to begin with. If your AI traffic is close to zero, run the free check on your best seller before you spend time on dashboards.
What should a monthly AI traffic report include?
Six lines, each from a source you already have. Keep the same layout every month so the trend is readable.
| Line | Where it comes from | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| AI Assistant sessions, by source | GA4 Traffic acquisition | How many shoppers click through from each assistant. |
| AI Assistant revenue and conversion rate | GA4, same report | Whether those visitors buy. |
| Top AI landing pages | GA4 Landing page, filtered to AI | Which products assistants send people to. |
| AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions | Search Console Generative AI report | How often Google's AI shows your links. |
| AI channel orders | Your store admin | Sales completed through agents, including ones GA4 never saw. |
| Share of recommendation | A fixed question set, run monthly | How often agents pick you over named competitors. |
Read the lines together. Rising impressions with flat sessions means you are being shown but not clicked. Rising AI orders with flat sessions means more buying is happening inside the agents. Flat everything usually means the agents cannot read you, which is a data problem, covered in what AI shopping agents actually read.
Key takeaways
- GA4 has had an AI Assistant channel since May 13, 2026. It catches visits whose referrer matches a known assistant, such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude.
- It excludes Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, which stay in Organic Search, and visits that arrive with no referrer, which land in Direct.
- A custom channel group can be applied retroactively, so it shows AI traffic from before May 2026 and from assistants Google doesn't recognize.
- Search Console and Merchant Center report on Google's AI surfaces. Your store admin shows orders completed inside agents.
- Treat AI traffic as a floor. Pair it with orders, surveys and share of recommendation for the full picture.
Questions and answers
Does GA4 track ChatGPT traffic?
Yes. Since May 13, 2026, GA4 puts visits whose referrer matches a recognized AI assistant, including ChatGPT, into an AI Assistant channel in the default channel group. ChatGPT also adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to its links, so you can find its visits under Session source too.
Why does some AI traffic show as Direct in GA4?
GA4 can only label a visit as AI traffic if the referrer or a tag says where it came from. Links copied out of a chat, and visits from apps that send no referrer, arrive with neither, so GA4 counts them as Direct.
Can you see Google AI Mode traffic in GA4?
Not separately. Google says its AI Assistant channel excludes AI Overviews and AI Mode, so those clicks count as Organic Search. Search Console's Generative AI performance report shows impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode, and Merchant Center's AI performance tab shows your products' share of voice there.
How do you track Perplexity traffic in GA4?
Check Session source for perplexity.ai in the Traffic acquisition report. Google's examples for the AI Assistant channel do not name Perplexity, although its June 2026 Source group update does. To be sure it is counted as AI traffic, add it to a custom channel group.
Do purchases made by AI agents show up in GA4?
Not always. When an agent completes checkout inside its own interface, the shopper may never load your site, so GA4 records no session. Those orders still reach your store platform. Shopify shows orders from AI channels in the admin with channel or referrer attribution.
